I am a social worker by profession with 10 years’ experience working with hard to reach poor communities. My satisfaction comes from helping others find a solution to their problems and seeing everyone happy. I am an alumnae of International Development design summit (IDDS, Arusha Tanzania 2014) and International Development Innovation Network. After completing my master’s degree in Development Studies, specializing in women Gender and Development from the International Institute of Social Studies in the Hague, Netherlands in 2011, I made a hard choice of not taking up a formal job where I would earn monthly salary but engage in innovation so as to find a solution to the most pressing social problem of scarcity of affordable clean fuel for cooking in my community. After doing many consultations, I founded Teso Women Development Initiatives (TEWDI) a not for profit women’s run community based organization with headquarters in Soroti district Northeastern Uganda. TEWDI acts as a platform to mobilize communities to mobilize communities to participate in promoting longer healthier lives and socio-economic freedom for women and children in Uganda TEWDI provides the communities the much needed knowledge and skills to solve their problems by themselves. However, to make TEWDI’s programs more sustainable, I founded Appropriate Energy Saving Technologies Limited as a social business for TEWDI to generate some money to run some of the programs instead of relying on external funding alone. AEST makes and sells charcoal briquettes enterprise from recycled agricultural waste and improved energy saving cook stoves which save fuel to low income households and institutions in urban and periurban areas in East and North eastern Uganda.
